The fire was dispatched as a working fire. Engine 1 went en route and reported smoke showing from about 2 miles away and arrived with heavy smoke showing. I-Care ambulance was requested for stand-by along with Athens utility board to disconnect services. The fire appeared to start above the dining area, and after it broke thru the roof the fire went to a defensive attack. Englewood, Etowah Rural, Athens Rural and Mcminn County Haz Mat air truck were called to assist with manpower on the scene. Monroe County, Riceville, Calhoun and Claxton Fire Departments were alerted to cover for departments that were on scene. Fire Destroys Historic Forest Service Warehouse August 18, 2010 Washington - A Forest Service warehouse, built up the Entiat Valley by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, was destroyed by fire Monday afternoon. The blaze began in the warehouse and burned five to 10 acres of surrounding grass and forest land, said Forest Service spokeswoman Susan Peterson. She said Janet Flanagan, the Entiat District ranger, said the fire left her feeling a "tremendous sense of loss" and Flanagan added that "this was an historic structure and historic structures can't be replaced. It's a long part of the history of the entire Entiat Valley and the community is feeling it as strongly as the Entiat Ranger District employees." The warehouse -- about 10 miles off the Entiat River Valley -- was a working facility, Peterson said, and it held equipment for a full woodworking shop. She said a Forest Service employee reported that he was leaving the building about 4 p.m. when he heard a loud whooshing sound and turned to see the back of the building engulfed in flames. Fortunately, she said, a Forest Service crew with a tanker full of water happened to be in the area and quickly began working to contain the blaze. Also responding were crews from Chelan County Fire District 8 and the Bureau of Land Management. T hree helicopters also dropped water on the blaze. "That quick action, with all the agencies, probably saved the rest of the compound," Peterson said. Other buildings, which did not burn, included a bunkhouse, a trailer, two small houses with garages, a barn, a shed and a blacksmith shop. The compound also included a building where gasoline was stored. "We were very, very fortunate -- that was in front of the warehouse -- that that did not go up," Peterson said. She added that horses, normally held in a pasture near the warehouse, had been moved earlier in the day to another location. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Peterson said she did not know which agency was handling the investigation. The warehouse and other buildings are at the Steliko Work Center, which used to be the administrative site for what was, at one time, the Lower Entiat Ranger District. That district was first created in 1908. The main Entiat Ranger Station is now located in Entiat. *************************************************************** |
